2021-22 UEFA Europa League matchday five recap
The 2021-22 UEFA Europa League just finished its second to the last set of group stage matches. Here is our brief review of what happened this week.
Group G already set
Bayer Leverkusen and Real Betis defeated their respective opponents to finalize the allocation on Group G.
Leverkusen shorted Celtic, 3-2.
Robert Andrich scored a brace, while Moussa Diaby was responsible for the game-winner. Josip Juranović and Jota were the goalscorers for the Scottish club.
Over in Seville, Real Betis beat Ferencvárosi Torna Club, 2-0.
Christian Tello and Sergio Canales score the goals for the home side.
With these results, Bayer advance to the round of 16, while Betis would play at the preliminary knockout round.
West Ham, Monaco on to round of 16
Two other clubs stamped their place in the round of 16 with victories this week.
Andriy Yarmolenko and Mark Noble of West Ham United both scored on the first half to put away Rapid Wien, 2-0.
With 13 points, The Hammers secured a slot to the round of 16.
On Group B, Monaco defeated Real Sociedad, 2-1.
Kevin Volland and Youssouf Fofana were the mainstays for the Ligue 1 club, putting Alexander Isak’s effort to naught and the La Liga club in peril of missing the UEL knockout rounds.
Frankfurt, Leicester City in KO round
Leicester City won against Legia Warsaw, 3-1.
Patson Daka and James Maddison scored ten minutes apart to build a 2-0 wall by the 21st minute. Filip Mladenović got one back five minutes later, but Wilfred Ndidi responded almost as quickly to cap the scoring with still more than a half in play.
Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt and Antwerp ended their contest in a 2-2 draw.
Kamada Daichi opened the scoring with a goal at the 13th minute. Radja Nainggolan then tied the count in 20 minutes’ time.
Mbwana Samatta briefly gave the Belgian the upper hand with a conversion at the 88th minute. However, Gonçalo Paciência salvaged a point for the Bundesliga representative with a goal four minutes past regulation.
For the two clubs that presently head their respective groups, all that remains to be determined is which KO round they will find themselves in.
