2021-22 UEFA Europa League matchday six recap

There was not much movement in the final day of the 2021-22 UEFA Europa League group stage save for some teams looking to lock their position. Here is our look back of the matches that mattered.

Spartak Moscow, Napoli complete cast on Group C

Group C was the place to be as all clubs were still on the running for UEL knockout spots.

Spartak Moscow nicked Legia Warsaw, 1-0, to take first place and advance to the round of 16.

Zelimkhan Bakayev was responsible for the game-winner, a strike that went in at the 17th minute.

Meanwhile, Napoli edged Leicester City, 3-2, the Italian club booking a place to the KO round play-offs.

Elif Elmas scored a brace and the pivotal goal, while Adam Ounas had one as well for the victors.

Jonny Evans and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall managed to tie the tally with goals at the 27th and 33rd minutes.

Real Sociedad make it to KO play-offs

At Estadio de Anoeta, Real Sociedad snatched the second spot on Group B away from PSV Eindhoven with a dominating 3-0 win, guaranteeing their stay in the competition.

Manager Imanol Alguacil would have to thank skipper Mikel Oyazarbal for his brace in their must-win tie. The midfielder sent Joël Drommel the wrong way with a penalty conversion two minutes before halftime, after Adnan Januzaj had his shot blocked by Phillip Mwene’s handball. He then doubled La Real’s lead at the 62nd minute, latching on Martin Zubimendi’s feed after the latter picked off Érick Gutiérrez from their own half.

PSV’s day went from bad to worse, as Ibrahim Sangare was sent off by referee Felix Zwayer with fifteen minutes to go.

Substitute Alexander Sørloth then put the finishing touches in stoppage time with a rocket of a goal.
