Ronaldo reaches footballing milestone as United edge Everton
Cristiano Ronaldo reached an uncharted milestone in football when he scored the winner in Manchester United‘s 2-1 triumph away at Everton early morning of Monday.
Coming in as a 29th-minute replacement to Anthony Martial, the Portuguese legend, who already has the record for most international goals for men, converted on the feed from Casemiro just a minute before halftime to complete the fightback.
Prior to that, United fell behind to an Alex Iwobi strike just five minutes in. New signing Antony leveled the match ten minutes later.
Ronaldo’s match-winner made it 700 goals in a storied club career spanning two decades, cementing his place as football’s greatest goal scorer of all time.
His scoring account in club football began with his boyhood club Sporting Lisbon, hitting a brace in a 3-0 win over Moreirense in 2002.
Then, his first spell with the Red Devils the following year saw him find the net 118 times. This includes a massive 42-goal haul in a historic 2007-08 campaign where he won both the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, as well as lifting his first Ballon d’Or award, at the age of 22.
In 2009, he moved to Real Madrid following a then-world record fee, and fired a club-record 450 goals in which he won the next four Ballon d’Or awards as well as four European Cups for the Spanish giants.
After his departure from the Bernabéu, he then spent three-plus seasons with Juventus and scored 101 goals. His return to Old Trafford in the 2021-22 season produced 24 more strikes.
Even with his role under Erik Ten Hag reduced to some sort of degree, he has been productive in his limited minutes on the pitch. His other goal this campaign was a penalty conversion against Sheriff at the UEFA Europa League.
