Hazard offered Chelsea return, but deal looks highly unlikely

Eden Hazard has been offered to Chelsea, though a return to Stamford Bridge for the winger looks unlikely given the finances involved.

Hazard has endured a disappointing period since leaving Chelsea for Real Madrid in a deal worth around €100m two seasons ago, struggling for form and fitness and scoring just four league goals for the Spanish side.

The 30-year-old made just seven league starts for Los Blancos during an injury-plagued 2020/21 and Real are reportedly ready to cut their losses on the Belgian and have offered Eden Hazard back to Chelsea.

AS.com reported that ‘intermediaries’ have offered the west London side the chance to re-sign the winger, who established himself as one of the best players in the Blues’ history during seven seasons in the capital.

Hazard won six major honours across seven seasons and scored 110 goals in all competitions, winning Chelsea’s Player of the Season accolade on four occasions and winning the PFA Player of the Year accolade following Chelsea’s title success in 2014/15.

However, Real’s deal to sign Hazard is believed to account for €20m per summer, with the Spanish side likely to want to recoup the €60m that they still owe the Stamford Bridge outfit, a figure which the report concedes is a ‘very high’ amount.

Add to that Hazard’s current salary at the Bernabeu is higher than what he was earning during his last stint in the Premier League, and it further dampens the chances of a return.

Given the current economic climate and Thomas Tuchel’s current squad, a deal appears unlikely with Chelsea already possessing Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi amongst their creative and wide options.

Chelsea are thought to be willing to splash the cash this summer, though the focus of their attentions is on recruiting a striker, with the club said to be willing to make a big-money move for Erling Haaland, though Dortmund insist he is not for sale.
