Varane’s legacy at national team
The defender has spent more than ten years with the tricolor, making 93 international appearances and winning two titles, the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League.
2018 World Cup victory and 2021 Nations League are among Varane’s best memories with the national team.
In addition to that, he played an important part in two consecutive World Cup final for France in 2018 and 2022. Among Varane’s regrets must be the early elimination at Euro 2021 despite entering the competition as strongest contender.
Within only months, France parted ways with their top players as Karim Benzema, Hugo Lloris and Steve Mandanda already announced their retirements.
Varane’s message
It’s surprising to see a world-class player quitting international career as such an early age. According to the man himself, it’s time for the new generation to take over.
“The time has come for a new generation to take over,” the 29-year-old said in a farewell message on the social network Instagram.
This is the full statement from the former Real Madrid player in his accounts, where he explains the reasons for his farewell.
“Representing our great country for a decade has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Every time I wore this special blue jersey, I felt immense pride. The duty to give everything, to play our hearts out and to win every time we take the field. I’ve been considering it for several months and I’ve decided that it’s the right time to retire from international football.
“As a child, I remember following France 98, this national team, these players who gave us indescribable emotions. I dreamed of doing like our heroes and, 20 years later, I had one of the best experiences of my life, one that made me very proud. We brought the Cup home! I will never forget it. I still feel every single emotion I felt that day, 15 July 2018. It was one of the greatest and most memorable moments of my life.”
