The Southeast Asian nation now has to deal with a big blow after FIFA’s decision since they automatically qualified for the U-20 World Cup as host.
The May 20-June 11 event now will be pending for FIFA to find another host.
What happened?
A statement by FIFA was released earlier:
“FIFA has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023,”.
“A new host will be announced as soon as possible, with the dates of the tournament currently remaining unchanged. Potential sanctions against the PSSI may also be decided at a later stage.”
FIFA stripped Indonesia of the right to stage this year’s U-20 World Cup, with the decision resulted from the governor of the largely Hindu island of Bali refused to host Israel’s team.
The decision to stop Indonesia holding the event was taken after the country’s football federation (PSSI) said it had cancelled the draw because the governor of the largely Hindu island of Bali refused to host Israel’s team.
This month, the capital Jakarta saw protesters march waving Indonesian and Palestinian flags and demanding that Israel was not allowed to participate.
Indonesia’s message and the damages to be done
When asked why FIFA had decided to remove Indonesia as hosts, Zainudin Amali, deputy chief of PSSI and former sports minister told KompasTV:
“FIFA decided Indonesia didn’t follow through with its earlier commitments while bidding.”
“That we were removed from hosting rights is already tough for us,” he said.
The World Football body’s decision will absolutely cause damages to Indonesia. This big setback will make the country lose ‘trillions of rupiah’, said the PSSI this week.
Meanwhile, losing hosting rights would harm Indonesia football teams’ chances of taking part in other FIFA tournaments, beside the economic damage.
