What happened to Williamson
Williamson, who is the current New Zealand’s ODI captain, is diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after he was injured in his first IPL match of the season for Gujarat Titans.
Footage can be watched below, that the 32-year-old cricket star landed awkwardly after attempting to take a catch on the boundary. Kane was carried off the park after laying on the ground in agony.
The cricket star is set to undergo surgery in three weeks once the swelling around the knee has reduced.
Williamson injury’s effect
New Zealand Cricket on Thursday then delivered the news that the whole country must have been gut to know.
“Unfortunately for Kane, he has ruptured his ACL in his right knee,” Black Caps coach Gary Stead said in a video interview.
Kane also revealed his feeling after the injury:
“Naturally it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab,” he said.
“It’s going to take some time, but I’ll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
With six months until the start of the World Cup – which runs from October 5 to November 19 – and ACL’s typically taking a six-to-nine-month rehabilitation period.
Williamson is unlikely to be fit for selection for the this year’s event in India and his absence would be a huge blow for New Zealand.
He averages 47.83 across 161 ODIs with 13 centuries.
At the last World Cup, in 2019 in England, he was named player of the tournament, having been the fourth-highest run scorer (578 from nine innings) at an incredible average of 82.57.
Williamson’s replacement
Following Williamson’s injury, Tom Latham, who has captained New Zealand in the absence of Williamson this year, and will lead the ODI squad on the upcoming tour of Pakistan, could take over the role.
