What happened
Kevin De Bruyne leveled for City in the 67th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu, all of that was after Vinicius had put Madrid ahead with a stunning goal in the first half.
The 1-1 draw would leave the tie open ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium a week from now..
Sensational and emotional for De Bruyne with such a goal, however, the clip from TV images showed that the ball had gone out of play on the near touchline, seconds before Belgian’s goal.
The Spain capital club manager Carlo Ancelotti was frustrated by the decision of not reviewing by VAR:
“The ball was off the pitch. That’s it. Technology said it. I don’t understand why VAR did not check it. The referee did not pay attention enough to many things tonight.”, said the Italian boss after the game.
This is the pair’s third time clashing in UCL knock-out round in four seasons.
The latest matchup is a repeat of last year’s Champions League semifinal, which saw Madrid progress 6-5 on aggregate after a sensational 3-1 second-leg comeback at the Bernabeu, inspired by Karim Benzema.
