The Argentinian scored to seal the Premier League side’s victory against Real Madrid in the Semifinal’s second leg, but he was an unused sub in the final.

Alvarez joined the nine other players who won the European Cup or Champions League and the World Cup in the same season, but he is the most special one who made history by winning the domestic double and the UCL.

The 23-year-old forward moved to Manchester City in July 2022, and it took him only 11 months to claim all the most honorable titles any player could dream about Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, and World Cup.

During this season, he scored 11 goals for City as their second top scorer, while he was the third top scorer at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Alvarez played 49 games for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, starting 23 in all competitions.

The Manchester club beat Arsenal in the stunning Premier League title race, all before they defeated city rivals Man United in the FA Cup and finally saw off Inter Milan during a night at Istanbul, by Rodri’s only goal.

Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez could have done the same and been the 10th player, but Alvarez’s side pulled it eventually.

Among the top 10 players, there were up to six from Bayern Munich and Germany in 1973/74, and the other three played for Real Madrid.

Raphael Varane was the latest player before Alvarez to win World Cup and UCL in the same season, having been crowned World Cup 2018 champions with France and beating Liverpool to clinch the UCL with Real Madrid.

But Real – being the Champions League specialists – were crowned European champions without winning either La Liga (or even finishing second) or the Copa del Rey in those seasons.

Meanwhile, Alvarez becomes the 13th player to win the Champions League and its South American version, the Copa Libertadores.

David Luiz, Ramires (Chelsea), and Carlos Tevez (Manchester United) are the three others to do with an English team.
