Barcelona STILL paying Lionel Messi over outstanding wage bill
Joan Laporta admits Barcelona are still paying Lionel Messi until 2025 over an outstanding wage bill, as the Catalan giants’ president discussed the situation of the financial struggles.
Messi departed from Barca a few years ago due to the financial crisis, which continued to prevent the club from re-signing their legend after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired in June.
The 2022 World Cup champion joined MLS side Inter Miami after he left Paris Saint-Germain. But Barca still owe money to Messi and Xavi Hernandez’s potential contract renewal.

Barca will still pay Messi until 2025
In the latest review with La Vanguardia, the Barcelona president has revealed that the club still owe Messi outstanding payments, which are expected to end in a couple of years.
“What is owed to him is the deferral of wages that was agreed with the previous board and that produces outstanding payments that end in 2025,” Laporta told La Vanguardia.
The president also discussed Messi’s decision to reject Barcelona’s advances and sign for Inter Miami instead. Back in June, Messi explained that he picked David Beckham’s side Miami to avoid causing more financial troubles for the La Liga 2022/23 champions Barca.
“We had an agreement with LaLiga that we would dedicate part of the resources we have to Messi,” Laporta said.
“It was included in the viability plan. We communicated it to Jorge Messi, who told me that Messi had had a very difficult year in Paris and that he wanted less pressure.
“With our option, he would have continued to be under pressure, and I understood his decision.”

Laporta on Xavi’s contract and Ansu Fati’s situation
Laporta expressed his optimism that the club will extend their manager, Xavi’s contract, despite the fact that there will be limited transfer signings done this Summer.
“[Xavi] understands the club’s situation,” Laporta noted.
“He would like to strengthen the midfield, but he knows that some options are unfeasible and it would be wrong [if we signed them].
“He wants to continue, and there will be no problem.”
Per Fati, Laporte believes that the La Masia product will stay put and ignore several reports claiming that the Spanish youngster may leave in the Summer.
“Let him continue,” Laporta added.
