David Beckham’s side, Miami, now advances to the cup final – their second final in eight games with – fair to say – The best player in the world – Messi.

Inter Miami 3-3 FC Cincinnati (5-4 Pen) – Highlights

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were down and nearly out, one minute away from the first loss of the Messi era. However, the Argentinian legend refused to bow out as he delivered again.

Argentine midfielder Luciano Acosta scored in the 18th minute, and Brandon Vasquez scored a right strike in the 53rd minute as FC Cincinnati held a 2-0 lead for most of the match.

Messi started for the seventh straight game; the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was held scoreless for the first time with the American side.

But he still made his impact felt loudly in this match, assisting on both of Campana’s goals during the first 90 minutes. And the internet can not get enough of the second assist in the dying minute that took the game to extra-time.

Miami’s Josef Martinez scored three minutes into extra time to give his side its first game lead at 3-2. But Yuya Kubo scored in the 113th minute to send it to penalty kicks.

Nick Hagglund missed Cincinnati’s final kick, thanks to the excellent reflex by Drake Callender in the fifth round. The 18-year-old Miami native and Argentina national Benjamin Cremaschi clinched the victory for Inter Miami in dramatic fashion.

Messi’s incredible but nerve-breaking record with Miami

It’s safe to say Messi has been re-written all the odds since he moved to Miami. He spent his entire time at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain without ever winning a penalty shootout for a club team.

Messi has won three shootouts since he came to the US…. First against FC Dallas and Nashville SC in the Leagues Cup, and tonight’s.

Lionel Messi’s scoring streak may have ended, but he did extend his streak of recording at least one goal or assist in each match he’s played for Inter Miami:

  • July 21 vs Cruz Azul: 1 goal
  •  July 25 vs Atlanta United: 2 goals, 1 assist
  •  August 2 vs Orlando City: 2 goals
  •  August 6 vs FC Dallas: 2 goals
  •  August 11 vs Charlotte FC: 1 goal
  •  August 15 vs Philadelphia Union: 1 goal
  •  August 19 vs Nashville SC: 1 goal
  •  Tonight vs FC Cincinnati: 2 assists

What a week for Inter Miami

Inter Miami have reached the US Open Cup final for the first time in club history, just days after co-owner Beckham lifted his ever trophy in the Leagues Cup.

It’s heartbreaking for FC Cincinnati, who lost their only previous US Open Cup semifinal match in extra time in 2017.

Inter Miami awaits the winner of the Real Salt Lake-Houston Dynamo FC semifinal for the US Open Cup final on September 27.
