Israel’s SC Dimona and Shimshon Tel Aviv have set a world record for the most prolonged penalty shoot-out, with 56 kicks.
Their semi-final promotion playoff in the third tier finished 2-2 after extra time, leading to penalties.
On Monday, Dimona won the shoot-out 23-22 after each side took 28 penalties in the Negev desert city of Dimona.
The previous record of 54 penalties was set in March 2022 in England when Washington beat Bedlington 25-24 in a first-round tie in the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup.
In December last year, Egypt’s Modern Future beat Pyramids 14-13 on penalties after a 0-0 draw. In 2005, a Namibian Cup match between KK Palace and Civics featured 48 penalties.
