Euro 2024: Germany coach is glad to have Toni Kroos back

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said he is glad to have former Real Madrid veteran Toni Kroos with the squad in the upcoming EURO 2024.

Nagelsmann glad to have Kroos back with Germany

Nagelsmann admitted he had to persuade Kroos, 34, to come back from his retirment from international football.

“It took a period of time to convince him because he wanted to know what we were going to change in the future for the national team,” Nagelsmann said.

“He said to me, one of the first phone calls, that he only will be part of the team when he has the feeling that we can win something, with the team.”

The midfielder confirmed his return to Germany in February.

Kroos, who will hang up his cleats for good after the Euros, was persuaded to rejoin Nagelsmann’s side after he was convinced that he is building a winning team.

“And so you want to know what are the next steps?” Nagelsmann was asked by Kroos last year. “What are the next decisions, how we change the team. And I told him, and then he said, ‘Yes, I will be part of it’ and ‘Let’s rock!'”

Germany to kick off EURO 2024 campaign as hosts

The host nation will kick off its EURO 2024 campaign against Scotland in Munich on Friday.

Scotland’s side feature several Premier League players and notably defeated Spain in the qualifiers.

Nonetheless, Nagelsmann is confident that his squad is fully-equipped to beat Scotland at home.

“Scotland isn’t a team full of world stars. But that makes them dangerous, because they are very agile players who give everything, with classic Scottish mentality,” he said.

“When I look in my players’ eyes, I see a lot of belief and a lot of confidence, which is what I want. We have the home advantage, we want to win.”

“We can beat pressure, and we can beat Scotland, as well.”
