PAUL TO JOIN SPURS, WEMBY FOR ONE-YEAR DEAL AFTER WARRIORS WAIVED HIM
The 39-year-old Paul will join the Spurs and French phenom Wembanyama for a one-year deal after the Warriors waived him, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday.
Furthermore, Paul agreed to a contract worth more than USD11 million to join forces with coach Gregg Popovich.
The deal will also see Paul serve as a mentor not just to the 20-year-old Wembanyama but to the Spurs’ No.4 overall pick Stephon Castle.
Paul and the Spurs negotiated a deal just hours after the Warriors waived him.
Paul’s USD30 million contract for the 2024-25 season for the Warriors was set to guarantee before Golden State waived him.
CP3 ‘SOLD ON CULTURE AND OPPORTUNITY’ TO RAISE WEMBY’S GAME WITH SPURS
NBA Insider Chris Haynes said Paul was “sold on the culture and opportunity to help elevate the game of” Wembanyama with the Spurs.
Furthermore, CP3’s guidance is expected to further raise Wembanyama’s stock.
Moreover, Wemby normed 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks in Year 1 with the Spurs.
It also helped that Paul is an admirer of Wembanyama, the reigning Rookie of the Year.
“Wemby is different and he’s the guy you’re talking about after the game,” Paul said of the 7-foot-4 center.
“Wemby is the guy that, after the game in the locker room we all were talking about playing against him,” he added.
SPURS COULD REACH PLAYOFFS WITH PAUL, WEMBY IN TOW
Furthermore, the Spurs could reach the playoffs in Wemby’s second season under Popovich with Paul’s arrival.
Paul averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists 3.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game in 58 games with the Warriors last season.
The veteran point guard agreed to a bench role in playing behind Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson with the Warriors.
Expect Paul to get most of the starting point guard’s minutes with the Spurs while possibly sharing time with Castle.
The Spurs will be Paul’s sixth team coming into his 20th season.
Paul started his career with the New Orleans Hornets in 2005 out of Wake Forest University before playing for the Los Angeles Clippers for six seasons.
The 12-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA first-team member also had stops with Houston, Oklahoma City, and Phoenix.
