England Netherlands Netherlands- Euro 2024 Semifinal Highlights

With a decent counter-attack, the Netherlands broke the deadlock after 7 minutes, thanks to a cannon by another youngster of the tournament, Xavi Simons.

The La Masia talent won the ball within the final third and went straight into England’s defense before releasing a wonderful finish that beat Jordan Pickford in the post.

England’s transformation was evident, as they pressed and controlled the ball, a stark contrast to their previous games where they adopted a more defensive approach.

Harry Kane attempted a long-range shot that was stopped by Bart Verbruggen shortly before another shot from the Bayern Munich striker went just wide. However, VAR intervened as Dumfries’s tackle affected Kane’s shot, and the controversial referee Felix Zwayer called it a penalty for Southgate’s side.

Kane’s successful penalty kick leveled the game, and he, along with Phil Foden, continued to pose a constant threat to the Dutch’s goal, keeping the game’s intensity high. With the equalizer, Harry Kane is now the all-time top scorer in knockout games in the Euro Cup, scoring six goals.

Meanwhile, Ronald Koeman struggled with possession and had no significant chances to score, except for a header from Dumfries that went wide.

Koeman’s side pressed when the second half started, but there have been no shots at either end since the game resumed. From a play on the right wing, Arsenal’s star Saka thought he accomplished the comeback with a close-range finish, but Foden, who assisted, was off-side.

Depay was forced off for injury, while Southgate introduced Cole Palmer in a search for more creativity. Then Ollie Watkins also stepped in to replace tired Kane.

When two sides thought of extra time, there was a massive moment when two England super-subs made the impact. Ollie Watkins, the substitute for Harry Kane, put the ball in the back of the net from Palmer’s assist.

Another sub, Palmer, on the right, threaded an excellent but simple pass into Watkins in the area. He had his back to goal, with De Vrij right behind him, but in a flash, he turned and rifled a stunning low shot into the far corner. The angle was tight, too tight, but Watkins nailed it.

Dortmund’s crowds, English, of course, went over the moon as they were only minutes from injury time to the final in Berlin. There were more subs from two sides, as the Netherlands were desperate for a final punch, which never came.

The final whistle was blown, and there were tears, both joyous and heartbroken ones, as England edged the Netherlands to advance to the final.

For the first time ever, England will play a major tournament final outside their own country, and their opponent is the record holder with 6-straight wins, Spain.
