BRUNSON NAMED AS CAPTAIN A REWARD AFTER GUARD GAVE KNICKS DISCOUNT

New York saved USD113 million in salary to re-sign Brunson, last year’s first-time All-Star guard.
Moreover, Brunson is expecting greater things with his renewed partnership with the Knicks starting this upcoming 2024-25 season.
“This is literally just the beginning. I think about every decision that I make and I’m completely comfortable with what I’ve done,” the starting guard said.
“But I want to win. I want to win here (New York),” he added.
Brunson signed a four-year extension worth about USD156.5 million to stay with the Knicks.
KNICKS GREAT EWING CALLS BRUNSON ‘A BORN LEADER’
Moreover, Knicks great Patrick Ewing calls Brunson “a born leader” after the guard was named as captain.
“People just want to be around you, Jalen. You’re a born leader,” Ewing said.
Had Brunson finished the final year of his previous deal next season and become a free agent, he was qualified for a five-year, USD2698-million deal.
However, the 27-year-old son of former player Rick Brunson had no regrets of his decision.
“Winning trumps everything that I do individually,” Brunson said.
Through Brunson’s selfless act, the Knicks managed to land Mikal Bridges in a new trade, while re-signing OG Anunoby and Thibodeau.
NEW KNICKS CAPTAIN READY FOR BIGGER LEADERSHIP ROLE, LONGER PLAYOFF RUN
Furthermore, the Knicks captain is ready for a bigger leadership role as he tries to lead New York to a longer playoff run.
“Obviously this is no guarantee that we win a championship,” Brunson said.
“This is just me wanting to do my part to help this team try and get one,” he added.
Moreover, Brunson has studied players from other sports with great leadership skills that he can use in his new role.
On the other hand, he cited the Yankees’ Derek Jeter and the Patriots’ Tom Brady as some of the players he has studied.
“People can say they want to do a lot of things but it’s all about their actions,” Brunson said.
“So it’s all about the journey and I’m happy to be a part of it,” he added.
