PSG calls out racist abuse incident over Nuno Mendes

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) condemned the racist abuse directed at defender Nuno Mendes on social media following their Ligue 1 victory.

What actually happened?

Following PSG’s 3-1 win against Brest on Saturday, Mendes, 22, became a target of racist and abusive comment.

The Portugal defender, who is Black, shared on his Instagram account a racist message he received.

During the match, Mendes fouled Ludovic Ajorque in the box, resulting in a penalty.

Romain Del Castillo converted the penalty to give Brest the lead, but Ousmane Dembélé and Fabián Ruiz clinched a come-from-behind victory for PSG.

PSG condemns racist abuse towards Mendes

Meanwhile, the French club expressed its full support towards Mendes by condemning racial discrimination.

“Paris St-Germain doesn’t tolerate racism, antisemitism or any other form of discrimination. The racial insults directed at Nuno Mendes are totally unacceptable,” the statement read.

“We stand firmly by Nuno and all those affected and we are working with the relevant authorities and associations to ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”

“At Paris St-Germain, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusion, respect and unity both on and off the pitch. Racism has no place in soccer and we will continue to uphold the values of tolerance and respect that define our club.”

Mendes has made 80 appearances for PSG in all competitions.

He first joined arrived at Parc des Princes on loan from Sporting Lisbon in August 2021 before signing permanently in May.
