Tuchel to become the new England head coach

Tuchel, 51, becomes the third foreign manager to take over as the England men’s team coach, after late Sweden boss Sven-Goran Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello.

The former Bayern Munich manager becomes first German to ever lead the Three Lions.

Tuchel replaces Gareth Southgate, who stepped down following England’s Euro 2024 defeat to Spain.

The FA initially appointed under-21s coach Lee Carsley on an interim basis for England’s UEFA Nations League fixtures.

As per Sky Sports, Tuchel and the English Football Association (FA) both agreed to an 18-month deal.

Tuchel has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

“Until it’s announced obviously I can’t really comment, but we have to wait and see,” England captain Harry Kane told Sky Sports.

Kane previously worked with Tuchel in Bayern last season.

“Obviously, I know Thomas well from last year. Fantastic coach, fantastic person, so I am sure the guys at the FA will contact me when they know more about it.”

Returning to England

The appointment marks Tuchel’s return to England.

Tuchel served as Chelsea boss in January 2021, where he led the team to a Champions League title.

The German also guided Chelsea to UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup victories.

However, he was sacked in September 2022.

Overall, Tuchel has won 11 major trophies including the Bundesliga with Bayern, two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain, and the DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund.

England reached back-to-back EURO finals under Southgate and are looking to secure their first trophy in 60 years at the 2026 World Cup.
