AXELSEN FORCED TO QUIT AS CHRISTIE OUSTED
Axelsen was forced to quit in his match against Frenchman Alex Lanier in their men’s singles match after he was seen throwing up and feeling unwell.
Furthermore, the Danish world No.2 was down 19-21, 7-11, when he signaled officials to discontinue the match.
Moreover, it was a tough call for Axelsen, who hopes to lift the trophy before his home fans in Odensk.
“I wanted him (Axelsen) to playing his best badminton so I could put up a good fight against him,” Lanier said.
“The crowd was too but it’s not the way I wanted to win. He told me he was sick after the match,” he added.
LU STUNS CHRISTIE, MEETS WATANABE IN QUARTERS
Moreover, Lu recovered from a second-set loss to stun world No.3 Christie, 21-19, 8-21, 21-18.
Furthermore, the Chinese shuttler edged Christie in the opening set but the Indonesian bounced back mightily to force a decider.
Lu, who was held to just eight points amid Christie’s mighty charge in the middle set, broke out of an 18-all tie to seal the match.
The result means Lu will take on Japanese Koki Watanabe in the last eight on Friday.
Watanabe ousted Olympic silver medallist Kunlavut Vitidsarn, 21-12. 21-19.
PV SINDHU DROPS HAN YUE, ALSO ADVANCES TO LAST 8
Moreover, PV Sindhu overcame a sluggish start to beat Chinese Han Yue of China, 18-21, 21-12, 21-16.
Furthermore, India’s world No.18 needed 63 minutes to outlast Han, whom she last defeated at the Malaysia Masters final in May.
The victory extended the former world champion’s head-to-head advantage against Han to 7-1.
Sindhu will meet either Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia or home favorite Mia Blichfeldt in the women’s singles last eight.
The Indian shuttler holds a 10-2 record in her head-to-head matchup against Tunjung, but she hasn’t played against her this year.
