Thompson gets a “Captain Klay” tribute as he and the Dallas Mavericks visit the Golden State Warriors in their first NBA Cup game.

Furthermore, the All-Star guard was given a warm reception from Warriors fans on his first visit to the Arena as part of an opposing team.

Moreover, he remained revered in Oakland after playing on four of Golden State’s championship teams during his 11-year tenure with the franchise.

Golden State staged a “Salute Captain Klay” night, as the guard is known for using a boat to go to Warriors games.

Fans received a white captain’s hat with a Warriors logo on it to honor him.

CURRY LEADS PLAYERS’ TRIBUTE VIDEO FOR KLAY

Stephen Curry led the players’ tribute video for Thompson, which was shown ahead of the game.

Moreover, Curry and Thompson combined to become the revered “Splash Brothers” that led the Dubs’ title-winning run since 2015.

Furthermore, Thompson acknowledged the cheers of the San Francisco crowd in an emotional homecoming.

Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game in his last season at Golden State in 2023.

He later signed a USD50 million deal with Dallas.

He is currently averaging 13.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and two assists with the Mavs so far this season.

KYRIE ‘EXCITED’ FOR KLAY, ASSURES MAVS SUPPORT FOR NEW TEAMMATE

Furthermore, Kyrie Irving was “excited” for Thompson.

He assured the Mavericks’ support for their new teammate coming into the emotionally charged game.

Moreover, Irving felt Thompson deserved all the cheers and tributes accorded to him in Oakland.

“I’m excited for him. I want him to be present as much as possible,” Irving said.

“He put in a lot of work here, a lot of sacrifice for this organization. To really receive the love and the flowers that he deserves,” he added.

Irving said it’s only “right that we support him, show him a lot of love, and get ready to compete on the court.

Meanwhile, Curry scored 37 points on five three-pointers as the Warriors spoiled Thompson’s return by pulling off a 120-117 victory.
