Martino resigns as Inter Miami coach
The former Barcelona and Mexico coach will address the media in his final news conference on Friday.
The decison came just a week after Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were eliminated from the first round of the MLS playoffs after falling to Atlanta United FC in the best-of-three series.
“It’s not a success when you lose in the quarterfinal round,” Martino told reporters after Inter Miami was eliminated from the playoffs.
“If one thinks about where we were last November, there has been progress for the club, not just the team. If one considers the expectations we had for these playoffs, we’ve come up very short.”
Martino’s legacy in Miami
Martino joined Inter Miami in June 2023, the year that also marked the major signings of Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez.
The 61-year-old guided Miami to the 2023 Leagues Cup trophy and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.
The Herons also set the league record for most points recorded in a single season during the 2024 campaign.
However, Inter Miami faced challenges in the Concacaf Champions Cup, falling to Monterrey in the quarterfinals, and exited the 2024 Leagues Cup in the round of 16.
The Argentine coach leaves the club with a 38-13-16 record in 67 matches.
