Sheeran helps sign new Ipswich player

In August, Sheeran acquired a small stake in the club, coinciding with their return to the Premier League for the first time since 2002.

At the Soccerex industry event in Miami, Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton revealed that the pop star assisted in recruiting a player before joining Taylor Swift on stage at Wembley Stadium.

“In the summer, we were trying to persuade one particular player to join the football club and realized very quickly that he was an Ed Sheeran fan,” Ashton said.

“Ed jumped on a Zoom call with him at the training ground, just before he stepped on stage with Taylor Swift. Hopefully that was a key part in getting the player across the line.”

Ashton didn’t disclose the player in question, but he said: “He’s certainly scoring a few goals.”

Who is that player?

Sheeran and Swift shared the stage at Wembley Stadium on August 15.

Before the concert, Ipswich secured the signing of Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn.

The 29-year-old forward was last season’s top scorer in the second-tier Championship.

After scoring an overhead kick in Ipswich’s 2-1 win over Tottenham this month, he shared a picture of himself with Sheeran on Instagram.

“Overhead kick, Win & a smudge with big ed. GET IN THERE,” Szmodics wrote.

Nonetheless, Ashton acknowledged Sheeran as a huge part of the club.

“He’s a local man, a global superstar, sponsor of the football club, now a shareholder and now officially a part of our recruitment team.”
