AFF Cup 2024: Who will be Vietnam captain?

The 2024 AFF Cup or ASEAN Cup 2024 is the major tournament, and Vietnam, a heavy contender, will need a righteous captain as it looks to battle for a third title.

As the latest squad was announced, there were massive omissions, with former captains Đỗ Hùng Dũng and Quế Ngọc Hải did not make the call-ups. National team head coach Kim Sang-sik created a shock wave of complaints and opinions with the 30-man squad, but it is time to move on and find the next captain for the regional tournament.

Vietnam team captain candidates as the 2024 AFF Cup is near

According to sources from the famous Vlogger Minh Hải, a trusted site when it comes to local football, the team’s next captain nominees are Nguyễn Quang Hải, Nguyễn Tiến Linh, and Bùi Hoàng Việt Anh.

Quang Hai, the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 MVP, is deemed the strongest name on the list, with a reputation second to none.

The midfielder is the current leader of Hanoi Police FC and a key player in the V-League. Rumors have it that the latter two will be vice captains for the 2024 AFF Cup.

The former Ligue 2 player of Pau FC used to be the national team captain. However, center-back Quế Ngọc Hải, who missed out on the coming ASEAN Cup, was the constant holder of the armband.

As it was planned, Việt Nam will finish the training in South Korea in early December before returning to the country for AFF Cup preparation. Within this period, head coach Kim Sang-sik will call up more names from V-League reigning champions Thép Xanh Nam Định FC.

Việt Nam will kick off the 2024 ASEAN Cup with an away trip to Laos on 9th December.
