NBA FINES HAWKS USD100,000 FOR BENCHING YOUNG VS CELTICS
The NBA fines the Hawks USD100,000 for benching All-Star guard Young when Atlanta faced the Boston Celtics on November 12.
Furthermore, the league cited Atlanta’s decision of sitting out Young in an NBA Cup game violated its player participation policy.
Moreover, the Hawks listed young as out due to tendinitis in his right Achilles.
Atlanta managed to beat Boston even without Young, 117-116.
However, the Hawks still violated the league’s policy wherein a team’s star players should be fielded in “for all national television and NBA In-Season Tournament games.”
YOUNG ‘COULD HAVE PLAYED’ UNDER THE ‘MEDICAL STANDARD’ IN THE POLICY, SAYS NBA
Furthermore, the NBA said Young “could have played” under the “medical standard” in the policy.
Moreover, Young missed a regular-season game for the first time this season.
The league made the decision “following an investigation, including review by an independent physician.”
“The organization’s conduct violated the policy, which is intended to promote participation in the NBA’s regular season,” it added.
Young might’ve been allowed to sit it out “unless a team demonstrates an approved reason for a star player not to participate in a game,” the league said.
