Tottenham’s struggle continues
The Spurs were 2-0 up within 11 minutes of the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski capitalizing on mistakes by full-back Marc Cucurella.
However, Spurs’ dream start quickly turned into a nightmare as the visiting team completed a comeback.
Jadon Sancho rifled with a powerful shot after 17 minutes, giving Chelsea a much-needed momentum boost.
Palmer equalized from the spot just past the hour mark as Chelsea began to dominate in the second half.
Enzo Fernandez’s volley put Chelsea ahead, and Cole Palmer secured the win with his second penalty.
Son Heung-Min scored a consolation goal in the sixth minute of added time.
Postecoglou says Tottenham believes in his philosophy
Tottenham fans booed the squad after the final whistle, with many having left earlier, feeling defeated by the team’s seventh league loss of the season.
Postecoglou previously confronted the fans after his side’s 1-0 Premier League defeat at Bournemouth on Thursday.
Nonetheless, the pressure is mounting on the 59-year-old, with the club sitting 11th in the table and now seven points adrift of the top four.
“It is a tough moment because there are all these tools you can possibly use as a manager when you are going through tough moments to turn things around and our limited resources from a playing perspective at the moment doesn’t allow us to do that so you have to find other ways,” Postecoglou told a news conference.
“It’s not through a lack of effort. The players are constantly out there because we can’t rotate. They are giving everything they can. It diminishes performances as well because they probably need a rest but we can’t give them a rest.”
Tottenham have an injury crisis this season, losing Cristian Romero to a quad injury after just 15 minutes, while Brennan Johnson went off with an illness.
Micky van de Ven was also forced to play only 79 minutes due to a hamstring issue.
Despite their recent setback, the Australian boss believes the squad is determined to turn things around.
“I think it is something we need to tackle head on and keep pushing on. There is still plenty to play for us between now and January just to make sure we keep performing,” he said.
“I still sense within this squad there is a real conviction in what we are doing and if we maintain that we will turn our season around and hopefully at some point we hit some smoother waters in terms of some of the things that are happening at the moment.”
