ASEAN Cup – Vietnam goalkeeper Nguyễn Filip practiced superstitious ritual before Indonesia clash
ASEAN Cup 2024: Before the clash with regional rivals Indonesia at the group stage, Vietnam’s national goalkeeper Nguyễn Filip and team captain Đỗ Duy Mạnh practiced a ritual for luck.
On his Facebook, Filip posted a video of him and defender Duy Mạnh burning a piece of paper before the goalkeeper jumped over it seven times.

According to traditional belief, this ritual is called ‘Đốt vía,’ a practice that will bring fortune or burn bad luck away. The pair believes this ritual would help strengthen Filip’s confidence after nine games without a win with the Vietnam national team.
According to team leader Duy Mạnh, there is nothing superstitious about this practice, which will make Filip more calm and feel solidarity with his nation’s spirit.
Nguyễn Filip expect to start against Indonesia at the coming Asean Cup clash
Filip was in the mix before the ASEAN cup kicked off earlier, as the Vietnamese half, Czech Republic shot-stopper posted a photo with him wearing the match details printed against Laos, all before he was benched to watch Nguyễn Đình Triệu starting up in the post.
Nguyễn Filip joined the national team in January 20243, but the results were nowhere near his expectations. He started with a 1-2 defeat in the unofficial friendly against Kyrgyzstan before back-to-back defeats at Japan (2-4), Indonesia (0-1), and Iraq (2-3) at the Asian Cup in the same year.
In the second round of World Cup qualifiers 2026, Nguyễn Filip featured in three defeats at Indonesia, 0-1 and 0-3, and Iraq, 1-3. He went on to another loss at Thailand 1-2 và finally a draw against India 1-1, both of which were friendlies.
Filip will have his chance at the coming clash on 15 December, when Vietnam hosts Indonesia in the ASEAN Cup 2024.
