United wins on penalty
Bruno Fernandes put United ahead in the 52nd minute, before Diogo Dalot his second yellow card for a tackle on Mikel Merino nine minutes later.
Gabriel Magalhães equalized in the 63rd minute, but Martin Ødegaard missed a penalty 18 minutes before the end of normal time, leaving the result in the balance at the Emirates Stadium.
United felt the penalty decision was fair, even though Harry Maguire made minimal contact with Kai Havertz in the box.
There is no VAR in the FA Cup until the fifth round.
The Reds capitalized on Kai Havertz’s missed penalty, thanks to a crucial save by goalkeeper Altay Bayındır.
Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty for the 10-man United side, 5-4, setting up a fourth-round home tie against Leicester City.
United “deserved to win”
Amorim was hyped with his squad’s dramatic victory, saying his team “deserved to win.”
“Thankfully the players were there, they fought,” Amorim said.
“Sometimes what we talk about before the match is not tactical or technical, it’s this. We have to compete no matter what, no matter what the situation we competed today.”
“We deserved to win, Arsenal didn’t deserve to lose but we deserved to win. The way we played, the way we fought was really tough since the beginning. We didn’t have the ball too much but we had control without the ball.”
