HALEP GETS PRAISE FROM BILLIE JEAN KING AFTER RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Halep gets praise from King after the former announced her retirement at a tournament at her home country.

Furthermore, the retired tennis great described Halep as an “incredible athlete.”

Moreover, King cited Halep’s 24 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) titles, which is the most by “any woman in Romanian tennis player in history.”

“Simona is an incredible athlete, and has won more WTA titles (24) than any woman Romanian tennis player in history,” King said on X (formerly Twitter).

“Best of luck in the next steps of your journey, Simona,” she added.

Moreover, the current world No.10 called Halep a “big inspiration for me.”

“Simona, wish you all the best in your new chapter. You were a big inspiration for me,” Badosa said.

“Your tennis and fight would be missed. Happy life champion,” she added.

RETIREMENT AT CLUJ TOURNAMENT IMPORTANT FOR SIMONA IN FRONT OF HOME FANS

Halep’s retirement announcement at a tournament in the Romanin city of Cluj was important for her to face her comptriots.

Furthermore, the current world No.870 took the microhone after her first-round loss at the Transylvania Open.

She pondered retirement a day earlier, as she admitted her current knee injury is “difficult to recover from.”

Moreover, Halep addressed the crowd amid her 1-6, 1-6 loss to Lucia Bronzetti.

“It’s very hard to reach that level, and I know what it takes to get there,” Halep told the crowd.

“That’s why I wanted to be here today, in Cluj, to play in front of you and say goodbye on the tennis court, even if my performance wasn’t great,” she added.
