DJOKOVIC SAYS MORE TENNIS PLAYERS LOSING FAITH ON WADA, ITIA AFTER SINNER BAN
Djokovic says more tennis players are losing faith with anti-doping authorities following Sinner’s three-month ban.
Furthermore, the Serbian former world No.1 felt the pulse of majority of his fellow players recently.
Moreover, Djokovic called on WADA and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to change the process on doping cases.
“Right now there is a lack of trust generally from the tennis players, both male and female, toward WADA and ITIA and the whole process,” Djokovic, who is in Doha for the Qatar Open, said.
“It’s not a good image for our sport, that’s for sure,” he added.
NOLE CITES HALEP, MOORE CASES THAT VARY FROM SHORTER BANS ON SINNER, SWIATEK
Moreover, the player also known as “Nole” cited the cases of former women’s world No.1 Simona Help and British player Tara Moore.
Furthermore, Halep was slapped by the ITIA with a four-year ban in 2022.
This, after she was tested positive before it was reduced to nine months.
Meanwhile, Swiatek agreed to a one-month suspension in November after testing positive for a banned substance.
Moore was suspended in May 2022 while a probe lasted for 18 months.
An independent tribunal learned that her positive test for a banned substance was caused by contaminated meat.
“Right now it’s a ripe time for us to really address the system, because the system and the structure obviously doesn’t work, it’s obvious,” Djokovic said.
WADA SETS RECORD STRAIGHT, CITES DIFFERENCES IN SINNER, BARQUERO BANS
WADA set the record straight, as it cited differences in the ban imposed on Sinner and Spanish figure skater Laura Barquero.
Furthermore, the agency cited evidence that clearly explained Sinner’s version.
The Italian world No.1 said the anabolic clostebol was accidentally put on his body by his physiotherapist.
Moreover, WADA noted that Barquero was also tested positive for clostebol.
Her explanation had the agency said was unconvincing “in light of the evidence.”
WADA then entered into a “case resolutoion agreement” where Barquero was suspended for six years.
In contrast, Sinner agreed to a three-month ban after his legal team forged a settlement with WADA.
“If Ms. Barquero did not agree with the proposed sanction, she was not obliged to sign the case resolution agreement and was free to take the case forward for hearing at CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport),” WADA said.
