Wembanyama diagnosed with blood clot

The news comes hours before San Antonio’s home game against the Phoenix Suns.

Doctors diagnosed Wembanyama, 21, with deep vein thrombosis.

The team said in a statement: “the condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco.”

The treatment almost always involves blood-thinning medication, which generally prevents a player from participating in contact sports like basketball.

The Spurs remain optimistic that Wembanyama will make a full recovery by the start of the 2025-26 season.

“The medical experts and the people that are smarter than everybody in the room have said and confirm that he’ll be done this year and there is no concern for Victor’s long-term health, personally, or anything related to his basketball activities,”  Spurs acting head coach Mitch Johnson said.

“There is no reason to believe he won’t be ready to go starting next season.”

Stellar season for Wembanyama

Wembanyama, the reigning Rookie of the Year, is enjoying a spectacular 2024-25 season before a blood clot sidelines him.

The 7-foot-3 Frenchman is leading the NBA in blocked shots (3.8 bpg), while also posting 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 46 games.

He made his first All-Star appearance last weekend, taking part in the Kia Skills Challenge and the All-Star Game itself.

Johnson said he has remained in contact with Wembanyama.

“He just wishes he could be with his teammates is what I would share,” Johnson said.

“I don’t want to speak on someone’s reaction for them. But I think as much as Victor wanted to be with his teammates, his teammates enjoyed and want to be with him. I know they, as we all feel Victor’s pride and passion playing for the Spurs and being a part of the NBA and loving just to play the game. So, it’s a minor setback for a major comeback.”

Wembanyama will not be eligible for All-NBA, Defensive Player of the Year and other major awards because he did not meet the 65-game minimum.
