SINNER REMOVED FROM LAUREUS’ SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINATION
Sinner was removed from Laureus’ Sportsman of the Year award due to hisc ban caused by two failed doping tests.
Furthermore, the Italian 23-year-old’s name was withdrawn from the nomination amid his settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Moreover, Sinner and WADA announced the settlement on February 15.
WADA appealed the decision of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in not suspending Sinner amid the failed tests.
If the Italian world No.1 didn’t settle, WADA is lookng to suspend him for at least a year.
LAUREUS EXECUTIVE CONFIRMS DECISION
Laureus World Sports Academy chairman Sean Fitzpatrick confirmed the decision after several discussions by officials.
Moreover, Fitzpatrick described as “ineligible” for the nomination due to the three-month ban that ends in May.
Furthermore, the Laureus official considered all the “circumstances involved” before making the decision.
“Following discussions by the Laureus Academy it has been decided that Jannik Sinner’s nomination for this year’s Laureus world sportsman of the year award is to be withdrawn,” Fitzpatrick said.
“Whilst we note the extenuating circumstances involved – feel that the three-month ban renders the nomination ineligible. Jannik and his team have been informed,” he added.
ITALIAN MISSES CHANCE TO FOLLOW DJOKOVIC, BONMATI FOR TOP HONORS
The announcement means Sinner will miss the chance to follow the footsteps of Novak Djokovic and Spanish football star Aitana Bonmati.
Furthermore, Djokovic won the top sportsman honor in 2023, while Bonmati was named top sportswoman.
Moreover, Sinner was found to have traces of clostebol, a banned substance, based on the tests last year.
However, the Italian said the substance entered his body through a massage from a trainer who used it after he cut his finger.
The ITIA accepted Sinner’s decision that it was purely accidental before WADA planned to appeal it.
