IOC BACKS BOXING INCLUSION IN LA GAMES AFTER GETTING EXECUTIVE BOARD’S NOD

The IOC backs the inclusion of boxing in the 2028 LA Games program after the executive board approved it on Monday.

Furthermore, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Back confirmed the board’s approval.

Moreover, a full IOC session is awaited to be signed off later this week to make it official.

“I am very confident that the session will approve it so that all the boxers of the world then have certainty that they can participate in the Olympic Games L.A. 2028 if their national federation is recognized by World Boxing,” Bach said.

His remarks came after IOC recognized World Boxing as the new governing body for the sport last month.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) lost ties with the IOC, which organized boxing tournaments in the 2021c Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Games.

Moreover, the IOC remained steadfast in looking for a new partner for boxing, until World Boxing came into the picture.

Furthermore, the IBA was suspended by the IOC in 2019 following issues on governance, finances, and the integrity of bouts and judging.

The IOC then banished the IBA from the Olympic movement completely in 2023.

This came after a breakaway group led to the formation of World Boxing.
