De Bruyne “a bit surprised”

The City captain is set to leave the Etihad when his deal expires at the end of the season.

De Bruyne announced his impending departure on April 4, bringing an end to his successful 10-year spell with the club.

However, the 33-year old revealed his surprise that the club made no offer of a new deal throughout the season.

“I have not had any offer the whole year, they (City) just took a decision,” De Bruyne said after City’s 5-2 win over Crystal Palace.

“Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I just have to accept it. It’s fine. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing. I understand clubs have to make decisions.”

De Bruyne also suggested that City’s struggles this year may have contributed to the decision.

The Belgium international has struggled with injuries, missing nearly five months of last season as City clinched their fourth consecutive Premier League title.

He played just 26 games in all competitions and has started only 19 matches this season.

“Maybe if the team didn’t struggle and I came back like I did this year [after injury] and bedded in like normal then maybe they would take another decision,” he said.

“I still have a lot to give. Obviously I know I’m not 25 any more but I still feel like I can do my job.”

De Bruyne also said that he is not sure if he will suit up for City in the upcoming Club World Cup.

Open to staying in Premier League

Meanwhile, De Bruyne said he is “open” to staying in the Premier League next season as he searches for a new club.

According to ESPN, De Bruyne has attracted interest from Major League Soccer and the Saudi Pro League, but he could still ssign with a top club in one of Europe’s major leagues.

“I’m open for anything, anything, just for because I have to look at the whole picture,” he said.

“I’m looking at sporting, family, everything together, what makes the most sense for me and my family.”

“I don’t know what that is, because it depends on when you speak to people and what they say about projects or something, like I said, I still feel like I can play at a good level, but then after I’ll have to make a decision once I really know a little bit more.”
