2023 Women’s World Cup – USWNT 3-0 Vietnam – Highlights
Mai Đức Chung’s ladies get their first taste of the prestigious women’s soccer tournament, but the debutants face arguably their biggest challenge – the USWNT.
USWNT dominated possession and controlled the tempo for most of the game. In the 14th minute, WWC newbie Sophia Smith broke the deadlock with a fine finish past Vietnamese goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh.
But the beautiful play that led to the opener was Alex Morgan’s courtesy, with USWNT’s most prominent star’s decent assist.
In the 44th minute, the U.S. received a penalty kick after Trinity Rodman was knocked down in the penalty area. Morgan took the kick and booted the ball low and to the left, exactly where the Vietnamese keeper lunged, saving the shot.
The save was more than a goal for the Vietnam national team, as they celebrated wildly.
But in stoppage time, the U.S. did get on the board again when Smith scooted the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to net her second goal of the half.
The Americans totally outclassed with 16 chances created, compared to zero attempts and no single shot from their counterpart.
The U.S. completed twice as many passes and kept the ball mainly on the Vietnam side the entire half — but surprisingly, could not find a way to score more than two goals.
However, their third goal finally came in the 77th minute. Co-captain Lindsey Horan delivered a decisive strike in the 77th minute after a sweet pass from Smith. That would be all the scoring — and Vietnam ended the game without taking a single shot or winning a corner kick.
Vietnam did all they could, and three goals conceded could be considered a success. Last time in the 2019 version of WWC, the USWNT crashed Thailand 13-0 in their opening group-stage game.
Next up for USWNT and Vietnam
The next game for the U.S. is Wednesday’s rematch of the 2019 WWC final against the ninth-ranked Netherlands.
Meanwhile, in the second game, Vietnam will take on Portugal as Huỳnh Như and co seek their first goal and point.
