RISACHER GETS NOD AFTER HAWKS TAB HIM AS NO.1 PICK
Risacher received the nod to the top after the Atlanta Hawks tabbed him as the No.1 overall pick on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old Frenchman thus became the second from his country to become the NBA’s top draft pick.
Victor Wenbanyama was called first by the San Antonio Spurs as the No.1 pick in the 2023 draft.
It was an all-France affair – at least between the top two picks – after Risacher beat big man Alex Sarr for No.1.
Furthermore, Sarr went No.2 with the Washington Wizards.
The seven-footer played in the Australia Basketball League with Perth last year.
An American was finally called after Kentucky freshman Reed Sheppard became the No.3 overall choice by the Houston Rockets.
The Spurs gifted Wenbanyama with a possible “co-star” in the upcoming season after they drafted UConn Huskies guard Stephon Castle with the No.4 pick.
BRONNY JAMES IN SPOTLIGHT AS LAKERS’ PICK IN SECOND ROUND
Meanwhile, Bronny James took the spotlight among second-round picks after the Los Angeles Lakers picked him at No.55.
Furthermore, the 19-year-old son of LeBron James can write NBA history.
Bronny and LeBron James can become the first father-son tandem to play in the league at the same time.
And possibly, as teammates.
Moreover, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka justified Bronny’s selection.
“Bronny is, first and foremost, a person of high character. And second, he is a young man that works incredibly hard,” Pelinka said.
“Those are the qualities we look for in drafting players and adding to our developmental corps at the Lakers,” he added.
Interestingly, Bronny James will join first-round pick Dalton Kncech, who was drafted by LA at No.17.
They are the two Lakers’ newcomers who are expected to play in the team’s Summer League opener against Houston in Las Vegas on July 12.
CASTLE EXCITED WITH TRANSITION FROM HURLEY TO POPOVICH WITH SPURS
Meanwhile, Castle is excited about the transition from playing for UConn coach Dan Hurley to Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.
“I was just playing for the best coach in basketball and now flipping to the NBA and going to play for a legendary coach like Coach Pop,” Castle said.
The 6-foot-5 guard got a phone call from Wembanyama after the draft in a move signaling the French big man’s support for his new teammate.
San Antonio was supposed to hold on to the No.8 pick – the second of its two first-round picks.
However, the Spurs picked Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham before trading his rights to the Minnesota Timberwolves for future draft picks.
