Champions League’s play-offs: AC Milan and Atalanta defeated

Surprises came thick and fast in the Champions League play-offs on the early morning of 12 February 2025. AC Milan, expected to have an easy time in Holland, were stunned by Feyenoord, who claimed a 1-0 win. The match turned on an early goal in the 3rd minute when Igor Paixao slotted home the game’s only goal. Despite Milan’s many shots, they couldn’t break through. Meanwhile, Serie A’s Atalanta also faced an unexpected twist as Club Brugge edged them 2-1. Although Atalanta were seen as favorites, Club Brugge struck early and held on with a late penalty, leaving the Italian side to rue missed chances.

Elsewhere, Monaco lost to Benfica in the first leg of their play-off, with a crucial goal from Vangelis Pavlidis in the 41st minute. Bayern Munich also secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Celtic, with Harry Kane netting his eighth goal of the season at Europe’s finest stage.

Over in the Premier League, the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool delivered non-stop drama. Everton opened the scoring in the 7th minute thanks to Beto’s early strike. But Liverpool, driven by star power, fought back hard. Mac Allister pulled one back in the first half, and Mohamed Salah added another in the second, giving Liverpool a seemingly unassailable lead at Goodison Park.

Just when it looked like Liverpool could celebrate, chaos erupted in stoppage time. In the 98th minute, a scramble inside the box led to a controversial header by James Tarkowski, leveling the match at 2-2. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations for Everton, while Liverpool were left stunned by the dramatic turnaround.
