This is a importantly historic victory by many ways: for the first time in AFF tournament history, Vietnam finally beat the regional rival. It’s surprising to know that since the 1998 version of the game, Vietnam always ended up in draws or defeats by Indonesia.
There were 6 tournaments that the pair did not encounter, which are: 1998, 2007, 2008 , 2010, 2012, 2018.
Secondly, the win is a firm statement from Vietnam’s coach Park Hang-Seo, who is having his last few games in charge of the team, in the duel against opponent’s Shin Tae-Yong.

A scoreless first leg draw in Jakarta two days ago let the return meeting in Vietnam be decisive at My Dinh national stadium.
On home soil, Vietnam was aiming for the win the will see them return to the final for the fourth time.
South Korean manager Park put five defenders for the starting XI, while entrusting Tien Linh and Tuan Hai upfront. And Park’s trust was fully paid, with an early goal by the Binh Duong striker after a fine solo effort.
Do Hung Dung’s long pass was good enough for Linh to approach the goal post, and his nice strike among 3 Indonesian defenders.
The early advantage put the home team in comfortable zone as Indonesia struggled to find a way through, with Vietnam played with discipline and solid formation.
It was not the chances that were stunning, but the clashes between individuals creating heats all over the cold weather of Vietnam’s last days of lunar 2022.
Vietnam duo Tien Dung and Van Hau and Indonesia’s Asnawi Mangkualam were cautioned as the half ended with the visitors again getting caught out by a Vietnamese break.
Second half started with the same outcome, Tien Linh put the ball back in the net with a strong header at the 47th minute from a corner-kick by again, Hung Dung.
The early advantage in the second leg was crucial, as Indonesia did not register a single shot on target while frustrated by Vietnam’s defensive line.
Pau FC player Nguyen Quang Hai created chances and had a shot himself but Nadeo was better with his fingertips save. Earlier, the Vietnam’s maestro almost pulled a goal of the tournament if his volley did not go wide from another corner by Hung Dung.
Despite being the team in need of goals, Indonesia were stifled by a well-organised Vietnamese defence and ended the game with zero attempts on target.
What’s next?
Vietnam will now face the winners of the other semi-final where defending champions Thailand are aiming to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Malaysia in the second leg in Bangkok on Tuesday.
The two-time champions will have the first final since the 2018 triumph and will be very well facing Malaysia just like 4 years ago.
Head coach Park may be having his dream farewell, if Vietnam could recreate the amazing achievement against Malaysia, or will it be Thailand awaiting in the final if the Elephants could turn the tide?
