Ancelotti says “anything is possible”

Ancelotti’s position has come under scrutiny following Madrid’s 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Speaking in a news conference on Tuesday ahead of their LaLiga match with Getafe, the Italian coach said Madrid can win both trophies if they find the “balance” within the team.

Asked if winning LaLiga and the Copa del Rey would mean he’d continue as Madrid coach, Ancelotti said: “In football anything is possible.”

“Are you surprised by anything that happens? Nothing surprises me… As I’ve always said, I love this job, I loved my first spell [from 2013 to 2015], I love this second spell [since 2021], and I want this to go as far as possible. One day when it ends, I’ll be thankful and take my hat off to this club, that’s all.”

Ancelotti embracing the pressure

The Arsenal defeat increased speculation linking Ancelotti with the Brazil national team job.

Additionally, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is reportedly a candidate to replace him at the Bernabeu.

Madrid is currently four points behind leaders Barcelona in La Liga with six games remaining.

They face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday and will again meet their rivals in LaLiga in May.

“The club is aware that it has been a more complicated year than last year,” Ancelotti said when asked if he feels any pressure.

“Together we manage the difficulties. The honeymoon continues. I’m very happy, very happy, with a lot of pressure, but that’s how it always is.”

“You see success very close and it’s normal for stress to increase, but stress is fuel for me, it doesn’t bother me, it gives me more energy to think about more things.”

“As long as I continue to get up in the morning, everything is fine.”
