ANTONSEN OUSTED BY INDIA’S SANKAR
Antonsen was ousted by India’s Sankar Muthusamy, 18-21, 21-12, 21-5.
Furthermore, the Danish world No.2 took the opening set but found his Indian opponent a tougher nut to crack.
Moreover, Sankar held his own in the middle set to force a decider before he dominated Antonsen in one final push to complete the stunning upset.
The Indian world No.64 recalled modeling his game after defensive-minded Japanese shuttler Kento Momota as his inspiration for the match.
“Yes, I played defensive, but it’s also about precision. My offence has got sharper. I look up to Kento Momota who had great defence and control,” Sankar said.
KUNLAVUT GETS PAST REMKE
Kunlavut avoided Antonsen’s fate but he endured a tough challenge from Rasmus Gemke before pulling off a 21-10, 20-22, 21-13 victory.
Moreover, the Thai shuttler allowed Gemke to foce a decider before he residcovered his aggressiveness in time to snatch the win.
Furthermore, Kunlavut emerged on top of his round-of-16 matchup in 84 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, China’s Li Shifeng ended the run of India’s former No.1 Kidambi Srikanth, 15-21 11-21.
Li needed only less than 40 minutes to progress into the next round, as he tries to take advantage the of the absence of compatriot Shi Yu Qi and keep the title in China.
KJAERSFELDT BEATS DAI IN WOMEN’S SINGLES PLAY
Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt emerged victorious in her round-of-16 match after she beat Dai Wang of Vietnam, 21-14, 15-21, 21-19 .
Furthermore, Kjaersfeldt had an impressive opening set before Dai responded to force a decider.
Moreover, the Vietnamese shuttler could not sustain her momentum, as Kjaersfeldt finally recovered to complete her match with a win in 63 minutes.
In another match, Supanida Katethong outlasted Malaysia’s Jin Wei Goh, 21-9, 18-21, 24-22.
Katethong also needed the full three sets and 59 minutes to end her Malaysian opponent’s campaign.
