Breaking Opponents’ Hat-Trick Dreams
This is the second time Vietnam has stopped a team aiming for three consecutive titles. In 2008, they ended Singapore’s hopes for a hat-trick by eliminating them in the semifinals.
Matching Singapore’s Final Record
Vietnam now shares a unique record with Singapore: defeating Thailand twice in ASEAN Cup finals. Singapore achieved this in 2007 and 2012, while Vietnam did so in 2008 and 2024. Apart from these two teams, no other nation has beaten Thailand in an ASEAN Cup final.
Winning on rival’s turf
Vietnam is also the first team to defeat Thailand twice on their home ground during the ASEAN Cup. This includes their win in the first leg of the 2008 final. No other team has managed an away victory against Thailand in this tournament.
New ASEAN Cup Records for Vietnam after beating Thailand
Vietnam set a new record with seven wins in a single ASEAN Cup campaign. In 29 years of the tournament, no team, including Thailand, has achieved this. Vietnam finished the competition unbeaten with seven wins and one draw.
Offensive Powerhouse
The team scored 21 goals, equaling their best-ever goal tally in the tournament, last achieved in 2002. For the first time, Vietnam had two players score four or more goals in the same campaign: Xuân Sơn and Tiến Linh.
Best Goal Difference
Under coach Kim Sang-sik, Vietnam recorded the best goal difference (+15) in their history, with 21 goals scored and only six conceded. Their previous best was +13 in the last tournament (16 goals scored, 3 conceded). The overall ASEAN Cup record of +16 remains with Indonesia, set in 2004.
Xuân Son Shines as Top Scorer
Xuân Son became the first Vietnamese player to win the Golden Boot outright with seven goals. In the previous tournament, Tiến Linh shared the award with Thailand’s Teerasil Dangda, both scoring six goals. Xuân Son’s performance was even more remarkable as he missed the first three games but still dominated the scoring charts. However, he fell short of breaking the single-tournament scoring record of 10 goals, set by Singapore’s Noh Alam Shah in 2007.
Vietnam’s 2024 ASEAN Cup campaign will be remembered for its historic achievements and impressive dominance on the regional stage.
