AXELSEN PULLS OUT OF WORLD TOUR FINALS 2024
Axelsen pulls out of the World Tour Finals (WTF) 2024 due to lingering pain on his left foot.
Furthermore, the Danish former world No.1 would miss the opportunity to defend the title he won the past three years.
Moreover, Axelsen emerged victorious under the previous tournament version, which was known as the Super Series finals.
This year’s tournament is scheduled from December 11-15.
The current world No.3 cited the recommendation of his medical specialists as the reason for him pulling out of the tournament.
FORMER WORLD NO.1 ‘DISAPPOINTED’ IN MAKING ‘UNFORTUNATE’ DECISION
Moreover, the Danish former world No.1 was “disappointed” in making his “unfortunate” decision.
Furthermore, Axelsen described the WTF as one of his “favorites” among the many tournaments he had played in.
“I’m unfortunately unable to participate in the HSBC World Tour Finals this December. I’m dealing with an injury ib my left foot,” the Dane said.
“Disappointed not being able to plat in Hangzhou. Having won the tournament five times and it being one of my favorite tournaments on the tour makes it a hard pill to swallow,” he added.
ANTONSEN MAY REPLACE COMPATRIOT AXELSEN AS CHAMPION; SHI, CHRISTIE, BOOST CHANCES
Anders Antonsen may replace compatriot Axelsen as the next champion even as China’s world No.1 Shi Yu Qi, Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, and Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia have boosted their chances.
Furthermore, Antonsen is seen as Axelsen’s heir apparent.
However, Asian badminton fans also pick either Shi, Christie, Zii Jia, Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen, and Japan’s Kodai Naraoka to win the USD2.5-million tournament.
World No.8 Li Shi Feng of China will replace Axelsen in the tournament lineup.
Meanwhile, Axelsen vowed to recover from his injury to get back on the tour.
“However, my first priority is to get 100% healthy before I compete. Thank you very much for your support always,” he said.
