AXELSEN, SE YOUNG WIN BIG IN MEN’S, WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Axelsen and Se Young win big by ruling the men’s and women’s Player of the Year awards, respectively, this year.
Furthermore, Axelsen was named the overall Men’s Player of the Year for being world No.1 for 132 weeks, New Straits Times reported.
However, China’s Shi Yu Qi bagged the Men’s Singles Player of the Year.
Moreover, Se Young claimed the overall Female Player of the Year and the Women’s Singles Player of the Year awards.
“Thank you to my colleagues who thought I deserved this award, it means a lot to me,” Axelsen said.
The Danish former world No.1 made a video message.
He could not personally attend te ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in Hangzhou.
AN ECLIPSES CHINESE PAIR, TUNJUNG FOR TOP WOMEN’S SINGLES HONOR
An eclipsed Chinese pair Wang Zhi Yi and Han Yue, as well as Gregoria Mariska Tunjung to coral the top women’s singles honor.
Moreover, the 22-year-old South Korean world No.1 was overwhelmed with the support she received from fellow players.
“I didn’t expect I’d receive so much support from other players. I’m delighted to get this award,” An said.
“I’m so happy. I have so many people standing by me, supporting me, and they are my biggest motivation,” she added.
SHI ‘FEELING GOOD’ AFTER WINNING YEAR-END AWARD
Furthermore, Shi was “feeling good” after winning his year-end award on a year he supplanted Axelsen as No.1 in June.
Moreover, the Chinese shuttler capped 2024 with four titles (India, French, Singapore, and Indonesia Opens).
“I feel good because this is recognition for my year’s hard work,” Shi said.
“I was more spirited this year and performed better, especially in team events,” he added.
Meanwhile, China claimed two of the three Para badminton awards.
Wheelchair star Qu Zimo collected his third Men’s Para Badminton Player of the Year award after earlier winning it in 2019 and 2021.
