Barcelona registered poorest stats in more than 20 years at Sociedad defeat

Real Sociedad defeated Barcelona as the Catalan side suffered from a poor evening, with zero shots on target for the first time since the 2003/04 season, which is more than twenty years ago.

Barcelona’s winning streak ended at number seven on a night that VAR caused massive controversy at the Reale Arena, where the visitors had not lost any of their previous eight trips.

Hansi Flick’s side has been the offside master this season. Still, there was a taste of their own medicine early in this game when, despite a stratospheric pass from the face-masked Pau Cubarsí and a terrifically opportunistic finish from Robert Lewandowski, the VAR room seemed to have picked something up. Meanwhile, Sheraldo Becker scored in the 33rd minute to end the Runner-up’s streak in fashion.

According to Opta Jose, Barca’s defeat at Sociedad was the first time since the 2003/04 season that Barca failed to register a single shot on target in a La Liga game.

The result still leaves Barça well clear at the top of the Liga table, but the gap between the Catalans and Real Madrid has been narrowed to six points, the latter with a game in hand.
