Bayern retires No.5 jersey for Beckenbauer
Beckenbauer passed away at the age of 78 earlier this year.
Many regard him as Germany’s greatest footballer of all time.
The decision was announced at the club’s annual general meeting, roughly a month before the first anniversary of his passing.
After a video clip reliving some of Beckenbauer’s greatest moments, his widow, Heidi, and son, Joel, took the stage.
“Franz Beckenbauer will remain untouchable, he will forever be our Kaiser,” Bayern president Herbert Hainer said to the members in attendance.
Hainer said that Bayern should retire his iconic No. 5 jersey in memory of the Bavarian club’s greatest legend.
“The No.5 will be reserved for a unique legacy, because our club and its history are simply unthinkable without Franz,” he said.
“You made this club what it is today, a byword for the greatest possible success, a unique style and profound humanity, as a player, coach, president and companion. You gave FC Bayern the charisma that continues to have an impact today.”
Germany legend
Beckenbauer earned the nickname “Der Kaiser,” meaning “The Emperor,” for his exceptional contributions on the field.
The midfielder guided his country to victory in the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup.
At Bayern, he secured three consecutive league titles and a trio of European Cups.
Beckenbauer also had two stints as Bayern’s manager, leading the team to the Bundesliga title in 1994 and the UEFA Cup in 1996.
Additionally, he served as Bayern’s president.
