It’s USA vs France
Wembanyama, 20, sank a free throw to give France a three-point lead in the final 10 seconds.
Isaia Cordinier sealed the deal with a pair of free throws with 7.4 seconds left, thrilling the electric home crowd at Bercy Arena.
With the win, the France team is heading to its gold medal game for the second straight Olympics.
The host nation will now face the Team USA again for gold after the Americans survived Serbia, 95-91, in Thursday’s semifinal.
France “willing to spill blood”, says Wembanyama
Wembanyama, who finished the game with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots, truly left his blood, sweat, and tears on the court.
Literally.
The 7-foot-4 young star sustained a cut on his neck, staining his white France jersey with blood.
“In our national anthem, we talk about blood,” Wembanyama said. “We’re willing to spill blood on the court. So, it’s no big deal. If it allows us to win gold, I’m offering. Take all of it.”
The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year was drenched in sweat after playing 32 minutes on the court and struggled to hold back tears as the fans showered him with loud cheers.
“Of course, it’s part of a dream come true,” he said. “We can be part of a goal that we set for ourselves months back. We can write history, even more. A once-in-a-lifetime dream.”
“The fans, they made it hard for me not to cry. I thank them.”
