Champions League League Phase Draw: Top side’s opponents finalized
The Champions League will be under a new face in this season of 2024/25, and Thursday’s draw finalized the opponents and fixtures for the top sides for the league phase.
The high-tech draw took place in Monaco on Thursday. Portugal forward and record 5-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo pressed the all-important button to make a computer algorithm determine the fixtures.
Real Madrid, Man City, Bayern Munich, and more teams of Pot 1 learned their fates as the rundown of their opponents is now clear.
What’s new about this year’s Champions League
Teams cannot play another from the same country in the league phase. Hence, there is no potential for derbies, but the new system ensures many exciting matches between top sides.
To summarize, here is how things should be:
- 36 teams
- Each team plays eight games – four at home and four away
- Opponents decided by computer. Two opponents from each of the four seeding pots
- Teams who finish in the top eight will qualify automatically for the last 16
- Those who place ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged knockout play-off
- Whoever finishes 25th or lower will be eliminated and will not be entered into the Europa League.
- The number of matches in the new format will increase from 125 to 189.
- Each team will play at least eight games – instead of six – and a maximum of 17.
Since the number of games increases, Champions League action will begin on 17-19 September, and the league phase runs until 29 January rather than finishing before Christmas.
