Gallagher goes to Atletico Madrid

Gallagher, 24, signed a contract reportedly worth £34 million, extending until 2029.

The signing came after the midfielder was excluded from the first team for rejecting a short-term deal from Chelsea.

Additionally, he was not included in the squad for their Premier League opener against Manchester City at the weekend.

Meanwhile, the West London club signed Joao Felix from Atletico.

Chelsea decided to sell Gallagher, who has entered the final year of his contract, to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

18 years at Chelsea

Gallagher joined the Chelsea academy club at the age of six, and broke into the first-team picture in 2019.

The England international captained the Blues for the majority of the 2023/24 campaign under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

He bid his farewell to Chelsea in a post on social media.

“To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true. It’s been an absolute honour every time I put on the shirt, and it was a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions,” he said.

“I loved every moment. These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans. Hearing the chant of my name at the Bridge is a special feeling, and the banner you displayed meant the world to me.”

“Thank you for everything. I wish the club all the best for the future, and I hope to see you all soon at Stamford Bridge!”

Gallagher joins an Atletico side that finished fourth in LaLiga table.

Manager Diego Simeone also added Robin Le Normand, Alexander Sorloth, and Julian Alvarez during the summer window.
