Copa America 2024 Highlights – Argentina 2-0 Canada
Canada is one of six teams from the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) invited to the 2024 Copa América. Jesse March’s side did not do badly in their first game of the tournament.
The first half was tight as both sides had their chances, but they also wasted them. The most significant opportunity to break the deadlock belonged to Angel Di Maria, who blew an early one-on-one.
Canada also failed to find the back of the net, but they were lucky to stand solid against plenty of chances from the opponents.
After a scoreless first half, the breakthrough came early after the restart as Lionel Scaloni made no changes in a bid to see his side improve.
The Argentinian tactician had his trust paid off with the early breakthrough when Julian Alvarez pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired home. Messi’s through ball played a crucial role in the 49th-minute goal from Alvarez, who raised his tally to the eighth goal in 32 international appearances.
Both teams had opportunities to score, but none were taken until substitute Lautaro Martinez latched onto a Messi through-ball in the final minutes and doubled Argentina’s advantage. The 7th-time Ballon d’Or winner missed a couple of breakaway chances, but he delivered, one way or another.
Messi’s best scoring chance was in the 65th minute when Crépeau made a diving stop, and Derek Cornelius blocked Messi’s attempt off the rebound. Messi put a chip wide after he had a one-on-one with Crépeau in the 79th minute.
On the negative side, Canada have now gone 270 minutes scoreless in the Jesse Marsch era.
Meanwhile, Messi extended his own record with his 18th assist in the tournament history – not bad for a 37-year-old captain.
There were worries when Messi needed medical assistance when he was shaken up by a sliding tackle from defender Moïse Bombito in the 82nd minute, but he remained in the game.
