Ronaldo makes history with 900 goals
Ronaldo, 39, scored his 900th goal in official matches with a volley from Nuno Mendes’ cross in the 34th minute of the first half.
Portugal secured a 2-1 win in the group stage.
The goal marked Ronaldo’s 131st for Portugal in 209 appearances, extending his record as the all-time top international goal scorer.
Ronaldo also boasts 769 club goals across his career with Sporting CP, Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United, and Al Nassr.
The star forward also became the first men’s player in history to score 800 goals for club and country.
“It means a lot,” Ronaldo said. “It was a milestone I wanted to reach for a long time. I knew I would reach this number, because as I continue to play, it would happen naturally.”
Ronaldo dropped to his knees and cried after reaching the milestone.
“It was emotional because it’s a milestone. It seems like any other milestone, but only I know, and the people around me, how hard it is to work every day, to be physically and psychologically fit, to score 900 goals. It’s a unique milestone in my career.”
Ronaldo is 58 goals ahead of longtime rival Lionel Messi with 842 goals, while Brazilian legend Pele is third with 765 goals, according to ESPN.
The road to 1,000 goals continues
Ronaldo said he plans to score 1,000 total goals before wraps up his illustrious football career.
“I want to reach 1,000 goals,” he told his former Man United teammate Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel.
“If I don’t have any injuries, this for me is the most important [thing], I want that. For me, the best mark that I can have in football is to reach, first, 900 goals. After, my challenge is to be at 1,000 goals.”
