Ronaldo was selected for Portugal’s first Euro 2024 qualifying match against Liechtenstein, and he got his own new achievement.
The former Real Madrid and Man United star made history by breaking the record for the most international caps by a men’s player with his 197th appearance for Portugal.
He was included in the starting XI for Martinez’s side against his favorite opponent on international level.
Ronaldo now surpassed Kuwait forward Bader Al-Mutawa and marked the landmark achievement by scoring twice with a penalty and free kick, as Portugal thrashed Liechtenstein 4-0.
The win was a perfect start for Everton and Belgium former boss Roberto Martinez at the helm of the Selecao, a night that will be best remembered for Ronaldo’s record-breaking appearance.
Another day another record for Ronaldo
Prior to this game, Ronaldo has already been holding the record for the most goals ever and is the only male footballer to to have found the back of the net more than 100 times for his country.
He became the first player to score at five different World Cups when he netted against Ghana during the disappointed FIFA World Cup 2022.
With the brace in the latest game, Cr7 has now scored a goal for Portugal every year since 2004, which is 20 years in a row. Such incredible longevity from the 36-year-old striker.
